my style is not his style...(when did this happen?)
It used to be so easy when I could just buy him clothes and shoes, and he'd be fine with whatever I bought. But - something has changed - and I'm really noticing it this week as we've been out looking at clothing. I told him just because he doesn't have to wear a uniform this year doesn't mean he can dress sloppy!
We have 2 main rules for clothing at our house once you get to be about 4-5 years old:
- no cartoons on anything (especially not on shoes)
- no skulls/crossbones/etc
We don't want to look like a walking mummy, nor do we want to go to school looking like Spidey or Sponge Bob! :) Not that there's anything wrong with that - it's cute and all (when they're 3) and kids are just kids once - I completely understand that - but I want to see MY CHILDREN, not Nick JR characters. :) Of course, there are other (probably strange) things we follow for clothing guidelines - but at least G-man and I both agree on the 2 mentioned above.
Luckily, I have never had to pry Spiderman tennis shoes or CARS sandals out of his hands or anything like that. So at least we agree on that part - but aside from cartoons and the walking casket look - it's been hard to buy decent clothes. I never knew it could be this hard to agree on what "looks nice" with an 8-year-old boy. :) So far he has one pair of pants and a couple shirts...oh my...we have a long way to go...good thing he can wear shorts for a couple more weeks!

Escape...(& the pina colada song)
2 finished dessert pizzas - yum!
The kids picked the ingredients for these: butter, cinnamon/sugar, jam, cereal...I never tried a piece...but the kids gobbled it up! Must have been a good kid-friendly flavor combination!

CRIKEY!!

Okay - so it's not a crocodile...but it is a SNAKE!
The 3 kids had a ton of fun at a special Nature Exhibit with Grandma & Grandpa. And SH & I enjoyed a day to get some house projects done...in peace...we actually FINISHED the project (for the most part) - which would have been an impossible task had the kids been home. We ate lunch and dinner in peace...with only the dog to bother us...aaahhhh...it was a great day - for the kids - for grandma & grandpa - and for us as well!

10 Super Foods
http://health.msn.com/nutrition/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100212809
My interest in what is now known as integrative medicine began many years ago when I was a teenager and witnessed my grandmother battle a breast-cancer recurrence. In those days, it was typical for patients receiving chemotherapy to be confined to a hospital bed. Nothing was done to stop her decline—not nutritionally, not physically, not really medically—and she eventually wasted away and died in her bed.
A few years later, in medical school, I began suffering from ulcers and migraines. None of the physicians I visited provided any significant relief. Month after month, I tried to find a cure. Hypnotherapy, acupuncture, Rolfing massage—nothing worked. Out of desperation, I stopped eating the roast beef, burgers, and fried chicken I'd been raised on in favor of whole grains, legumes, and fruit. The idea that nutrition could help fight pain and illness was, in the medical community of the 1970s, unheard of. Yet within weeks, my ulcers and migraines disappeared.
- Garlic
This is a powerful organosulfate that's important in detoxification. It will help clean your body of leftover chemical residue from drugs or pollutants, secondhand smoke, and metabolites from alcohol. - Tofu
It's made from soybeans, which have all the benefits of other beans, including stabilizing blood-sugar levels to prevent diabetes. Try stir-frying it. - Mushrooms
Maitake and shiitake mushrooms are among the best sources of beta-glucan, which is known to stimulate the immune system. They also contain the protein lectin, which hinders cancer-cell growth. - Blueberries
These have an extraordinary amount of anti-oxidants, but many people are surprised to learn that one of their compounds, flavonoids, makes you smarter by boosting neuron signals in your brain. Look for wild varieties, which pack more antioxidants. - Kale
Possibly the healthiest food on earth, kale is rich in isothiocyanates, a phytochemical that suppresses tumor growth. Kale also contains indoles, nitrogen compounds that prevent lesions from converting into cancer cells. - Flaxseed
In addition to omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed contains lignans, which are antioxidants that suppress tumor growth. If you can't find flaxseed cracked, buy it whole, grind it, and then sprinkle a teaspoon over cereal. - Beans
Like other legumes, kidney and garbanzo beans are high in saponins, which are compounds that shield your DNA from invasion by so-called free radicals—unstable atoms that damage tissue and are associated with cancer. - Carrots
Besides beta-carotene—which helps prevent many types of cancer—carrots contain falcarinol, a chemical that slows the growth of cancer cells. - Tomatoes
Eat ripe tomatoes every summer. They're loaded with lycopene (an important phytochemical with antioxidant properties) and glutamic acid (an amino acid), which work together to prevent prostate cancer. Shop for organic varieties with a deep red color at your local farmers' market. - Strawberries
If you do a lot of grilling, eat strawberries. They're high in folic acids that scavenge the carcinogenic amines that are created when meat is cooked over high temperatures. They're one of the most important foods to buy organic, because they have a unique capacity for leaching pesticides.

5 Pseudo-Healthy Foods...
It may seem like the perfect way to save calories and slash your sugar intake, but studies show that diet drinkers actually weigh more than regular soda drinkers. For diet soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese tied to a 2-can-a-day habit is 57 percent compared to 46 percent for regular soda drinkers. Diet soda may throw off your natural appetite regulation, causing you to eat more sweets. It may also trick you into thinking it's OK to indulge in high calorie foods because you "saved" by choosing diet soda.
The label may shout 'fat free' and seem like a better alternative to chips, but they're made with refined white flour stripped of its vitamins and antioxidants. They're also dense so they pack a ton of carb calories for a very small amount and they’re not filling. Think of it this way—one 15- ounce bag contains the equivalent of 24 slices of white bread.
It looks green and good for you but spinach powder is only a scant ingredient. These wraps are typically made from refined white flour and the green hue primarily comes from food colorings (Blue No. 1 and Yellow No. 5.). In other words you can't rely on the immune boosting vitamins A and C found in fresh spinach and it's much higher in calories. One cup of cooked spinach provides 65 calories, 105 less than a spinach wrap, which doesn't count as a veggie serving. Not to mention the fact that the fillings often include ingredients like fried chicken, ranch dressing, cheese and bacon!
Even a trans-fat-free wild blueberry scone packs over 400 calories (the amount an entire meal should supply) and over 50 percent of the maximum amount of artery-clogging saturated fat intake for an entire day. They also don’t count as a serving of fruit and they’re devoid of dietary fiber.
Yes, it has vitamins, but at up to 200 calories per bottle (50 per serving with 4 servings per jug), just one of these a day can cause a 20 pound weight gain in a year's time if the calories aren't burned off.
